Our History
The Bechakas family has been in the restaurant business for five generations. James T. Bechakas, who emigrated from Greece in 1911, purchased the Greek-American confectionary from his father in the year 1919. This was called the Palace of Sweets located in the same building where the 4-Sons Dining Room is now.
In 1914 the Texas Hot Lunch building, a Kane Pennsylvania Restaurant, was rolled on logs from the current location of the post office to its present Field Street site. Years of deterioration resulted in the building being demolished and rebuilt in October, 1993.
The Texas Hot Lunch has been a family business since 1928. That is when two Greek brothers, Tom and Johnny,
decided to sell Jim their business which they had started in 1914. Jim ran the Texas Hot Lunch along with two
partners which included an uncle, Peter Bechakas, and brother-in-law, Peter Beros. In 1967 the Texas Hot Lunch was
sold to Jim’s sons, Terry and John. Terry retired after 22 years’ partnership.
Since 1989, it has been under the ownership of John and Toula Bechakas; and managed by their four sons.... James, Costas, Terry and Michael. Many changes have resulted, including the renovation and expansion of the business. In 1997, son Michael left the business to start his own venture known as “Kane Beer” – northwestern PA’s showcase beer and beverage distributing company.
The marriage of Terry in 2005 resulted in a second son leaving the family business. Terry now resides near Rochester NY with his family.
Beginning of 2007 saw the retirement of John and Toula with ownership and operations transferred to their sons. 2012 saw the departure of Costas, with Michael returning to operate the business with James.
The Bechakas family has worked hard to provide the community landmarks of excellence. John, Toula and their sons James and Michael, along with their families, take great pride in being a part of Kane and continuing to serve and support the community.
